Do I have to pay Council Tax while I am at College?

Answer

This will depend on your course.

Full-time students are eligible for Council Tax exemption/discount if:

1. They study NC/NQ/HNC/HND/Degree courses; and

2: Are studying more than 21 hours per week for at least 24 weeks in the academic year.

You need to apply to your local authority for an exemption or discount as it is not granted automatically when you become a student.

Glasgow City Council residents can apply for an exemption online at www.glasgow.gov.uk. Student Records will confirm electronically that you are a full-time student.

Non-Glasgow City Council students should download a student status letter from CityLife to send to the council.

Students can download a status letter from the MyLife section of CityLife.

If you are unable to download a status letter from CityLife, please visit Student Services Reception, Level 2, City Campus, call: 0141 375 5191 or email studentservices@cityofglasgowcollege.ac.uk

Part-time students and those on courses less than 24 weeks are not exempt and must pay Council Tax
